Juan was the son of the founder of the first film publicity agency in Mexico. The artist learned his trade from his father, and also attended the Academia de San Carlos, a renouned art school in Mexico. His son, Juan Antonio Vargas Ocampo followed in his father and grandfather's footsteps, and also had a career designing movie posters.
